Chocolate Contains Antioxidants

The main ingredient in chocolate is cocoa, which has strong antioxidant properties, warding off free radicals. Antioxidants are a compound that reduce oxidations, a chemical reaction that produces free redications and may cause damage to cells. Antioxidants can help protect against oxidative stress, which may be linked to cancer, atherosclerosis, and other health problems.

While there are many foods that contain antioxidants, the best one is chocolate! While darker chocolates, which have a higher cocoa content, provide more antioxidants, even milk chocolate contains a small amount of antioxidants, and we think that’s a win!

May Reduce The Risk of Cognitive Decline

According to a Medical News Today article, scientists have suggested that drinking two cups of hot chocolate a day could help keep your brain healthy and reduce memory decline in older people. It was found that hot chocolate boosted blood flow to part of the brain where it was needed. The brain needs more blood flow in certain areas and this relationship between blood flow and parts of the brain may play a role in diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Cocoa extract, which is called lavado, may be able to reduce damage to nerve pathways found in patients with Alzhemier’s. Lavado could also help slow symptoms of cognitive decline as well. In another study, it was suggested that eating chocolate at least once a week could improve cognitive function.

Helps Lower Blood Pressure

Chocolate may also be able to lower blood pressure! The flavanols in dark chocolate can stimulate the lining of the arteries to produce nitric oxide, which sends signals to the arteries to relax. When the arteries relax, the resistance to blood flow is lowered, lowering blood pressure.

Cocoa and dark chocolate have been shown in many studies to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure. While it may not do much to help those with high blood pressure, it offers mild benefits to those who don’t have high blood pressure.

Chocolate Is Good For the Soul

An Everyday Health article mentions that chocolate may stimulate neural activity in areas of the brain associated with pleasure and reward, in turn reducing stress and boosting your mood! A handful of studies focused on chocolate and mood have been done, many of which showed improvements in mood, and the others noting evidence in cognitive enhancement.

Long story short, chocolate can make you happy! And we see proof of that every single day!
